- CentrifugesIndustrial centrifuges are used to separate, extract or wash products or materials in continuous, batch, industrial or environmental operations. Centrifuges are devices that separate solids from liquids when the two are mixed together. This separation occurs using the centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the centrifuge bowl. Solids are separated from liquids using high speed gravity. Many industrial processes use centrifugation to separate liquid phases and solids from each other. They are often used to extract liquids from solid material in chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, and wastewater treatment processes. - Basket CentrifugesBasket centrifuges or batch centrifuges can also be described as centrifugal filters or clarifiers. They are most commonly used in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries are known for being versatile and reliable. They have a perforated wall and cylindrical tubular rotor. In many cases the outer wall of a basket centrifuge consists of a fine mesh screen or a series of screens with the finer mesh screens supported by the heavier coarse screen, which in turn is supported by the bowl. The liquid passes through the screen, and the particles too large to pass through the screen are deposited. Manufacturers of basket centrifuges include Broadbent, Ferruum, Heinkel, Rousselet.
- Decanter CentrifugesDecanter centrifuges are used in the chemical, oil, food and waste water industries to seperate solid materials from liquid slurries. A solid bowl decanter consists of two horizontal concentric rotating elements contained in a stationary casing. The outer rotating bowl element is tapered so that solids discharge from a smaller radius then the liquor. The inner element is a hollow hub and helical screw conveyor with blades profiled to fit closely to the contour of the bowl. Feed slurry is introduced into the hollow hub by either pump or gravity, and as this automatically accelerates to machine speed the slurry is transferred by centrifugal force into the rotating bowl via discharge ports, where solids settle through the liquor pool formed on the wall of the bowl. There is a slight differential speed between the rotation of the bowl and that of the screw conveyor, which allows the solids to be conveyed continuously along the bowl wall, out of the pool and up the tapered drying beach towards the final solids discharge ports. - Disc Bowl CentrifugesDisc bowl centrifuges, conical plate centrifuges or disc stack separators as they are know are often used in the dairy and brewery industries and more recently they have been used in the bio diesel industry. The disc bowl type centrifuge operates at speeds of 3,000 to 20,000 times gravity, providing a continuous clarification system that is suitable for materials with a solids content of 1-2% or less. It is designed to separate either a solid/liquid, liquid/liquid or liquid/liquid/solid suspension on a continuous basis. Solids settle on the wall of the bowl and are discharged either manually or automatically by intermittent opening of the bowl. The disc stack greatly increases the effective settling/clarification area, and the liquid and solid phases travel up or down the disc surfaces. - Inverting Bag CentrifugesThe inverting bag centrifuge is an automatic, horizontal machine, incorporating an automatic unloading bag. Inverting bag centrifuges are often used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and chemical industries. The front and rear basket walls are pushed forward by a hydraulic unloading bag. The front and rear basket walls are pushed forward by a hydraulic piston to discharge the solids. The filter cloth is arranged as a cylinder, with the rear edge secured to the rear basket wall and the front edge to the basket shell at the front rim. As the piston moves forward, the cloth is turned inside out and the solids discharged in clumps into the solids collection housing. Inverting bag centrifuges are primarily used in the pharmaceutical industry and provide heel removal after each cycle, but are limited to smaller sizes and capacities. - Peeler CentrifugesPeeler centrifuges can offer both a filtering and sedimenting/decanting capability, and is particularly suitable to processing materials in the ultra-clean environment of the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries. Two types of peeler centrifuge exist: a heavy-duty chemical design and a GMP design. Peeler centrifuges have either perforated baskets and screen membranes for filtering processes or solid bowls for decanting. The centrifuge has a fully opening front-end casing, which allows safe operator inspection of the interior. It also posseses an automatic peeler knife mechanism for final cake removal which can under certain circumstances allow final solids to be removed at high speeds, though not all products are suitable. In an attempt to automatically remove the troublesome residual heels found in virtually all batch filtering centrifuges most manufacturers install various heel removal devices – a feature that would provide complete batch-to-batch containment as well as increased product yield. High g forces and increased discharge speeds means the peeler centrifuge uses shorter cycle times, which can be adjusted to ensure a range of washing capabilities. - Pusher CentrifugesPusher centrifuges are continous filtering type centrifuges used in the separation of solids and liquids. They are mainly used in the production of bulk chemicals, agrochemicals, plastics and foodstuffs. This type of filtering centrifuge not only operates on a continuous basis, but also provides long residence times. Solids are retained as a cake on a wedge wire basket from where it is transported by an oscillating pusher mechanism in the direction of the solids discharge. - Belt DryersBelt dryers, belt flakers or belt coolers as they are sometimes known are widely used across a range of industries where drying is required on a continuous basis. The product is conveyed through the dryer on a slow moving belt made of stainless steel screens or perforated plates. The product is either dried by passing heated air across the bed or alternatively cooled by spraying water on the underside of the belt. Belt dryers or belt coolers can be single or double belt systems and some manufacturers offer granulation, flaking and pastillation of products. - Drum DryersDrum dryers are commonly used to dry viscous, concentrated solutions slurries or pastes. Typically they are used in the food industry for the drying of starches, yeasts, baby food, cereals etc. Drum dryers generally consist of one or more hollow metal cylindrical rolls or drums that are mounted to rotate on horizontal axes at a variable speed. Often the drum is heated via steam or hot water. The product is spread onto the surface of the used drum dryer and is dried by the heat transfered throught the metal thickness from the heat inside the drum. A knife is often fitted to the drum to scrape of the the thin layer of dired material from the drum surface. Manufacturers of used drum dryers include Simon Dyers, Buflovak and Gouda.
- Fluid Bed DryersFluid bed drying is suited for powders, granules, agglomerates and pellets. They can be batch or continuous depending on the users requirments. Fluid bed dryers are used for a range of applications across the food, dairy, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The material to be dried is placed on a perforated screen, and air is blown through the screen at sufficient speed until the resulting pressure drop across the bed matches the total product weight. At this point the bed starts to fluidize and flow. Produt is dried from all sides, creating a more uniform moisture distrubtion, reducing the thickness of the vapor boundary layer around the product, and reducing drying time. - Paddle DryersPaddle dryers are indirect dryers used for drying, heating, cooling, pasteurization, crystallizing of pastes, cakes, powders and granules. They are used in the chemical, food, minerals, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. Industrial Paddle dryers consist of a horizontal single or twin agitator rotating within a cylindrical housing which is jacketed for indirect heating. Paddles are attached to the agitator which sweep close to the inner surface of the housing moving the product through the dryer. Often to achieve maximum heating efficiency the dryer is tilted slightly in the direction of the material flow. - Plate DryersIndustrial Plate dryers are mainly used in the production of fine and speciality chemicals. Plate dryers are continuous dryers, suitable for drying powders and granular materials which are free flowing and non-caking. Drying can take place under vacuum or at atmospheric pressure. Material is fed into the top of the dryer onto the first series of heated plates. The rotating raking system turns and conveys the drying product in a spiral path through several revolutions to and over the outer rim of the plate. The product then trickles to the plate below where the material is conveyed to the centre in the same manner as before. This process repeats itself as many times as is necessary until the dry material leaves the dryer at the bottom. Manufacturers include Andritz and Krauss-Maffei.
- Rotary DryersRotary dryers or calciners as they also known can handle a vast range of materials, however they are most likely to be operated in the mining, minerals, fertiliser and chemical industries. Industrial rotary dryers consist of a cylindrical shell rotated upon bearings and usually slightly inclined to the horizontal. Product is fed into the upper end of the dryer and dried product withdrawn at the lower end. Transportation of the product through the dryer is assisted by slowly rotating the shell. There are many types of industrial rotary dryer including: Direct rotary dryer – It consists of a bare metal cylinder with or without flights and is suitable for low or medium temperature operations. Direct rotary kiln – It consists of a metal cylinder lined in the interior with insulating block or refractory brick, in order to suitable for operation at high temperatures. - Pan DryersPan dryers or vacuum pan dryers as they also known as are used to dry liquids, pastes or powders under vacuum at low temperatures and normally used on applications that are heat sensitive. They are most commonly used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Typically they consist of a flat bottomed, jacketed, cylindrical vessel with bottom and side surfaces swept by a top or bottom mounted agitator. - Spray DryersSpray dryers and spray drying plants can be used for a wide range of applications however they are most commonly used in the chemical, dairy, food and pharmaceutical industries. A typical industrial spray drying unit consists of a large drying chamber, feed atomizer, hot air supply and dry product recovery/dust collection system. Spray drying involves the atomization of a liquid feedstock into a spray of droplets and contacting the droplets with hot air in a drying chamber. - Tray DryersTray dryers, shelf or oven dryers as they are sometimes known consist of a cylindrical or rectangular chamber containing heated shelves. Drying takes place at a low temperature under vacuum and the evaporated moisture is removed from the chamber by a vacuum pump and condenser. They are often used for drying small batches of heat sensitive or easily oxidized material. They are also well suited to materials that need very gentle handling, dusty materials and where material loss must be minimized. - Filter PressA filter press is batch operated filter in which liquor is filtered through the surface of plates under pressure forming a cake within the supporting frames. - Bead MillsIndustrial Bead Mills are used to reduce product or particles to sub micron size. - Colloid MillsColloid mills are used for the processing of various different products with a wide range of viscosities. Colloid mills consists of two parts, the stator and the rotor. Product is sheared in the annular space between the rotor and the stator which are both cylindrical. Product is fed through the rotor shaft to the centre of the rotor, flung out centrifugally between the two half’s of the rotor, and collected from the periphery of the stator. - Comminuting MillsComminuting mills are used for the granulation, pulverization or dispersion of wet or dry products in the chemical, food, pharmaceutical and related industries. - Hammer MillsHammer mills are impact mills and can be used to mill hard or soft materials and across a range of industries making them one of the most widely used type of mill. They are very robust and generally have low maintenance costs even when used under the most arduous of conditions. They consist of a number of hammers hinged to an axle. Material is fed from the top of the mill and is thrown out centrifugally and crushed by being beaten between the hammer bars. - Jet MillsJet mills, microniser mills or fluid energy mills as they are also known, are used for very fine grinding or for materials that must not be contaminated. They consists of a grinding chamber in which contains three or more compressed gas jet nozzles at the lower end with an air classifier at the top of the grinding chamber. Material is fed into the chamber and the jets accelerate the particles to produce collisions where energy is released causing particle breakdown. The air classifier at the top of the chamber allows particles through once they have achieved the required fineness and any over sized particles are returned to the milling section where they are further reduced by high velocity collision. - Nibbler MillsNibbler mills or lump breakers as they are sometimes known are used for the size reduction and reprocessing of agglomerates, granules and lumps for the powder processing industries. They are gravity fed and provide a gentle milling action ideal for soft or agglomerated products. They consist of an open top grinding chamber which contains a rotating shaft to which 3 or 4 paddles are fixed. Material is fed in the top of the chamber and the rotation and angle of the paddles sweep the product against the serrated screen with the reduced particles passing through the holes.
