Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) or IBC’s as they are also known are large, reusable industrial containers designed for the storage and transportation of bulk liquids and powders. They are commonly used in industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and agriculture. IBCs provide a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to traditional drums and barrels.
Key features of intermediate bulk containers include:
1. Size: IBCs typically have a larger capacity compared to standard drums or barrels, usually ranging from 200 to 1500 Litres.
2. Construction: They are often made of durable materials such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE), stainless steel, or a combination of both. The construction material is chosen based on the intended use and the compatibility with the stored substances.
3. Design: IBCs are designed with a palletized base for easy handling and transportation using forklifts or pallet jacks. They are often square or round. They may have a galvanised steel frame around the container to provide structural support and protection.
4. Outlet Valve: IBCs typically have a built-in valve or tap at the bottom to allow controlled dispensing of the contents. Some may also have additional features such as a screw cap or butterfly valve.
5. Stackability: IBCs are designed to be stackable, both when empty and when filled. This feature allows for efficient use of storage space during transportation and storage.
6. Reusability: One of the advantages of IBCs is their reusability. After use, they can be cleaned and refilled, reducing waste and environmental impact.
7. UN/DOT Certification: IBCs intended for the transportation of hazardous materials often need to meet specific safety standards and carry certifications such as UN (United Nations) or DOT (Department of Transportation) approvals.
8. Flexibility: IBCs can be used for a wide range of liquid or granulated products, including chemicals, food ingredients, pharmaceuticals, and more.
The versatility, durability, and ease of handling make intermediate bulk containers a popular choice for industries requiring efficient bulk storage and transportation solutions.
